Do you have a desire to help families navigate the Special Education process? Or perhaps you need help becoming a more skilled advocate for your child? If the answer is yes, then this training is for you! Being alone at an ARD meeting can be very intimidating for parents. Having a knowledgeable person attend a meeting with the parent can be a tremendous help and comfort. The Parent Partner program prepares volunteers to support families in the ARD process. The 4-hour intensive training includes: Preparing for the ARD Meeting, Understanding and Using Parent Rights, Effective Dispute Resolution Strategies, Evaluation Basics, Terrific Transition Tips, Favorite Resources…And MORE!!! This free training will be offered on Saturday, July 10 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Turtle Wing Foundation office (1203 S. Kessler Ave., Schulenburg). Lunch will be provided so please RSVP if you plan to attend. This workshop is facilitated by Brenda Nelson, Case Manager for Turtle Wing Foundation. Brenda brings a unique perspective to her training as the parent of a successful young adult on the autism spectrum who received special education services from age three through high school graduation. Having a background in education, her passion is helping parents and educators work together for the success of students with learning challenges in all stages of the journey. For more information or to RSVP please contact Susie Shank at susie@turtlewingfoundation.org or call the office at 979-505-5090 by 7/7/21. A similar training will be offered in Spanish on August 28, also at the foundation office. Turtle Wing programming includes Early Intervention, Supplemental Services, and Community Education and Advocacy. Turtle Wing helps to provide direct services to almost 300 children, with thousands more being impacted by their outreach programming. The recipients have all been from Colorado, Fayette, Lavaca, and surrounding counties with academic, social-emotional, behavioral and/or developmental needs.
